Ling 606: Phonological Theory / SPRING 2019

Overview

This is the second of two courses in the graduate phonology sequence (603, 606). Following up on 603 and with points of contact with 604, we'll look at phonology and its interfaces with phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics, with a focus on:

Goals: Together with 603, this course is designed to prepare you for (i) engaging with current and past research in phonology and (ii) pursuing your own research in phonology. This semester, we have a special focus on helping you integrate your knowledge and research in phonology with other areas of linguistics.

Readings and Exercises

Readings will be assigned approximately weekly, linked from this page. Reading questions will be assigned for each reading and are due before class when the reading is due, for 20% of the grade. Exercises will be assigned approximately weekly in the first part of the course for 25% of the grade. Typically assignments will be released each Thursday and will be due before midnight the following Tuesday.

Class presentation

One class presentation, for 5% of grade.

Term project

A term project will count for 50% of the grade. The emphasis will be on preparing a 20 minute talk. There will be staged assignments working up to this:
